What is the role of the mother tongue in vocabulary teaching? Will you switch to the mother tongue when you explain new vocabulary? Why or why not?
Some teachers teach vocabulary items by translating the items into the mother tongue. There is a problem to this way of teaching, especially in vocabulary teaching. The problem is that having the exact translations are not always possible. In addition, this way of teaching vocabulary only teaches students the meaning of the vocabulary items but not their functions in sentences.
I will not switch to the mother tongue when I explain new vocabulary, due to the fact that English and the mother tongue can be distinctively different in a lot of ways. Teachers should make this point clear to students, so that students are aware that English sentences are not just putting vocabulary items together.
