Reflection Journal #2

The English language curriculum framework underlines the subject targets, the three strands, and the learning objectives. Teachers are expected to follow this official curriculum in their teaching. Moreover, textbooks used in local school are published only after approval is given by the Education Bureau. Teachers are supposed to teach what is written in the textbooks. Yet, many problems raise if teachers follow the coursebook and other teaching materials mechanically, without realizing the underlying aims and objectives.

Knowing the contents in the coursebooks does not make a good teacher. A good teacher should aim to equip students with necessary skills to apply in the real world. To do that, I personally think that the teacher should put himself/herself in students' shoes and find out what are things that students can relate themselves to. When students see the point of learning something, they will put extra effort on it. In my own teaching, I will try to integrate grammar points with other skills; for example, reading skills. Hopefully, the interesting reading materials can make the grammar part less boring.

A graduate from the PGDE programme created a video, talking about his own experience in English language teaching. He believes a truly passionate teacher should always try to develop good teaching methods. He also stressed on the importance of students' motivation in English classes. He made a point that students show more respect when teachers are professional and have good teaching quality. I think I share the same beliefs. I would like to continue my studies in this profession and become a good teacher.
